Plant Update: Mini plant haul at my local nursery and Grocery Outlet

New plant haul! I know, I know, I know I shouldn’t get any more plants, but these sparked joy, OK? And perhaps more importantly, they were budget friendly. I haven’t bought any plants for over a month now, and I think that a monthly buying schedule is healthy. Look at me trying to justify my incorrigible vices.

Anyway, on with plant number one! I went to Grocery Outlet for the first time in a couple of months and *had* to scour their plant selection. I glossed over the basics — dracaenas, orchids, cacti, and crotons. What caught my attention was this mysterious spotted plant that almost looked like a calla lily or a polka dot plant. According to a lovely plant buddy, it’s a Florida Beauty dracaena. Which is good news — I’ve never killed a dracaena before, and this variety appears more glamorous than your run-of-the-mill dracaena. No shade to basic dracaenas. Added perks: the plant came with a cute plastic pot and only shaved off $3 from my bank account. 

After my little Grocery Outlet run, I meandered around the Rainforest Nursery a few minutes away. The store had a beautiful selection of garden mums, a plant that I inevitably killed last year because it’s not really meant to last! Anyway, the pink ones were so gorgeous that I had to take a picture! 

The store had more plants that I’ve been eyeing, including the neon philodendron and string of turtles. I decided not to take the plunge on these yet, since they were a little pricey (albeit, reasonably priced). Before I left empty-handed, I noticed that the employees were unloading a new batch of baby plants. And yes, I know that well-rooted plants are better in the long run, but these $6 babies were so cute! My first pick was the staghorn fern, a plant that I’ve been drooling over for a few months now. It’s inexpensive at Trader Joe’s, but I haven’t been able to find any there recently. Wish me luck — I have killed every single fern I owned. Look at that gorgeous, velvety texture, though! Who could say no? Pas moi. 

I also picked up a peperomia, and let me tell you…I have also killed every peperomia I owned as well. But this peperomia marcello looks steely, right? The foliage is adorable and reminds me a bit of the hoya lacunosa plant. 

Anyway, that’s all! I won’t be doing weekend updates consistently anymore, but I did have pretty fun plant news to share. My plants are going dormant now, which makes me a little sad because I can’t helicopter parent them anymore. Still, it’s nice to sit back and focus on other things while enjoying the view of a year’s worth of indoor gardening!
